Javier Mascherano has assured West Ham supporters that he and Carlos Tevez will soon click into gear.
The highly-publicised arrival of the Argentine superstars has coincided with an alarming slump for The Hammers, which has seen them lose their last four games in all competitions.
Mascherano accepts that he and Tevez have not quite lived up to expectations, but is confident that they can help West Ham to climb the Premiership table.
"Things are not going well for Carlos and myself but we are not despairing," he explained.
"West Ham have a good enough squad to be much higher in the table than we are right now.
"We have been so unlucky in so many games. We cannot seem to score and that has made us more anxious, but when we win the first game it will change.
"The Palermo game was massive for us because we wanted to play in Europe. Now we cannot afford to disappoint the fans any more."
Striker Carlton Cole echoed Mascherano's sentiments about how important it was for West Ham to get their next victory on the board.
With manager Alan Pardew coming under increasing pressure, Cole has urged his team-mates to get their season back on track in Sunday's game against Reading.
"We are determined to do well for the manager. We know how much it will mean to him," he said.
"Once we get a goal we will start scoring again. We are not a bad side, we just need to get the first goal instead of having to come back every game.
"We have the players, we just don't have the luck at the moment."
Teddy Sheringham, meanwhile, claimed the spirit in the camp was still high.
"A couple of players might be feeling down but as a team the optimism is still there," he stressed.
"We've just had a poor start and we need to start picking up some points."
