Matthew Upson believes Steve Bruce should have understood his desire to move.
Matthew Upson believes Steve Bruce more than anyone should have understood his desire to clinch a move against the wishes of erstwhile employers.
Upson completed a £6million move from Birmingham to West Ham on transfer deadline day but the switch was not without its controversy.
Blues boss Bruce had criticised Upson's agent Barry Neville for driving through the transfer.
However Upson believes Bruce should be able to sympathise with the player's situation following his own career choices.
Bruce quit Wigan after just seven weeks to become manager of Crystal Palace in 2001 before later that same year resigning to become boss at Birmingham.
"We had a chat about the situation in terms of moving clubs and honouring contracts," said Upson.
"I think he's had his fair share of controversy in that area.
"He is fully aware of the situation and whenever he has wanted to go somewhere he made it happen."
