Anton seeking senior call-up

Anton Ferdinand has set his sights on a first senior call-up to the England squad.

Anton Ferdinand has set his sights on a first senior call-up to the England squad.

The West Ham defender, 22, is set to play for England Under 21s in the friendly with Italy Under 21s on Saturday.

The game will be the first professional match to be played at the new Wembley stadium, and Ferdinand is keen to emulate the success of his brother Rio at the new ground.

"I never played at the old Wembley, but I saw Rio play there," he told the Daily Star. "Hopefully I can go from playing there with the Under 21s to playing there with the full squad."

Meanwhile, fellow West Ham centre-back James Collins believes Wales will face an 'intimidating' atmosphere when they take on Ireland at Croke Park on Saturday.

Wales are currently second from bottom in Group D of the Euro 2008 qualifiers, with only San Marino below them, while Ireland are third, behind Germany and Czech Republic.

A win looks crucial for Wales, but with Mark Delaney ruled out and Danny Gabbidon doubtful, Collins know the pressure will be on him to keep things tight in defence.

"It feels crazy being 23 and the senior man, but I'm excited about the challenge," he said.

"It will be an intense and intimidating atmosphere at Croke Park."
