The 32-year old was Sam Allardyce's first signing of the summer, joining on a free transfer having spent 10 years with the Ukrainian side, with whom he lifted the UEFA Cup in 2009.
Rat was a regular fixture during Shakhtar's Champions League campaign, which saw them reach the knock-out stages last season, and the Romanian believes that experience will help him to adapt to life in the Premier League.
"The Champions League is a great tournament; I think the Premier League is quite a similar level so it's not so big of a difference," he told Sky Sports News.
"But I hope West Ham will perform much better this year than the previous season and to get a good place to play in Europe."
