The Hornets did not take long to force the scoreboard operator into action when Lee Cook (pictured) netted his fifth of the season from close range.
Neil Cox doubled their advantage before the break when he slotted home from the penalty spot after 39 minutes.
Wimbledon failed to raise their game after the break and fell further behind when Jack Smith netted a third shortly after the hour mark.
Neal Ardley added a fourth to put the icing on the cake with their financially troubled visitors conceding their 65th league goal of the campaign.
Watford's win coupled with Gillingham, Derby and Bradford City's losses means they can breath a little easier in their fight against relegation on Saturday evening.
