The 21-year-old Northern Ireland international spent time on loan at Walsall earlier this season, before returning to St Mary's.
Baird has now been allowed to move again by new manager Paul Sturrock - who is likely to keep a close eye on his progress at Vicarage Road.
"He's a very welcome addition,'' said Hornets boss Ray Lewington.
"We can't cover any injuries to the back four with a natural defender on the bench.
"I tried to get him earlier in the season when we didn't have injuries - I think he's a terrific player.
"He plays with energy and enthusiasm, gets stuck in, gets forward and is the type of player I like.
"He's a really good character and that's the type of people we need around at the moment in the position we're in.
"We've kept tabs on him for some time and I've seen him play several times for Southampton reserves. If you're up against it you need his type, he's a competitor.
"One of his first-ever games was in an FA Cup Final last year and he's played international football many times for Northern Ireland so this situation will not daunt him. I'm absolutely delighted.''
