Middlesbrough thought they had scored a crucial winner against Birmingham City only for the goal to be wrongly ruled out by the assistant

Is this the moment that costs Middlesbrough automatic promotion to the Premier League?

Boro went into Friday night's game with Birmingham in a three-way tie at the top of the Championship, level on points with Brighton and Burnley.

With the game level at 2-2, it looked as though the visitors had edged ahead in the 69th minute when Daniel Ayala turned home.

However, the goal was disallowed for offside and Boro, who face Brighton on the final day of the season, had to settle for a point.

Replays showed the decision was incorrect and Boro boss Aitor Karanka said afterwards: "Normally in football when you score one more goal than the opponent you win the game. It didn't happen because Daniel's goal was disallowed and I can't understand why.

"I prefer to think it's a mistake, but what makes me concerned is a few mistakes have come against us. I feel we have played in different conditions than other teams."
