Newcastle and Brighton maintained a healthy lead over the chasing Championship pack with victories on Saturday.

Brighton regained top spot for a couple of hours as Tomer Hemed scored twice in their 4-1 defeat of Burton, but Newcastle finished the day a point clear thanks to Aleksandr Mitrovic's goal in a 1-0 win at Wolves.

Two of the top six lost ground, Barnsley holding Reading to a 0-0 draw at the Madejski while Leeds were beaten at home by Neil Warnock's Cardiff as goals from Sean Morrison and Kenneth Zohore gave the visitors a 2-0 win.

Reading's slip-up gave Huddersfield the chance to go third and they took it with a 2-1 win at QPR, Izzy Brown's fourth in five games opening the scoring, although the gap to second-placed Albion stands at six points.

It was a sobering afternoon for Nottingham Forest's caretaker management team of Gary Brazil and Jack Lester less than 48 hours after they were confirmed in their posts for the season.

Forest had Eric Lichaj sent off on their way to a 5-1 thumping at Norwich, whose haul included cracking goals from Jonny Howson and Wes Hoolahan.

Norwich are two points off the play-off places and three ahead of Derby, who salvaged a point from 3-0 down against Bristol City.

Matty Taylor's first City goal and a Tammy Abraham double put the visitors three-up at the break, but they were pegged back by Darren Bent's double and a Tom Ince strike.

At the bottom Rotherham were denied a rare win as a late Stephen Kelly own goal gave Blackburn a 1-1 draw. Both remain in the relegation spots along with Wigan, who went down 3-2 at Fulham thanks to a 94th-minute Neeskens Kebano winner.

Aidan McGeady's double helped give Preston a 4-2 win over Brentford at Deepdale, while Aston Villa slumped to a sixth defeat in seven games, David McGoldrick scoring Ipswich's winner.
