Leeds defender Liam Cooper has been charged with violent conduct after Saturday's defeat to Reading.

Cooper appeared to stamp on the head of Reading's on-loan West Ham defender Reece Oxford in the 74th minute of the 1-0 defeat.

The incident went unpunished as it was not seen by referee Keith Stroud but caught on video and the 25-year-old could now be facing a lengthy ban if found guilty.

"Furthermore, The FA has submitted a claim that the standard punishment that would otherwise apply for the misconduct committed by the Leeds defender is 'clearly insufficient."

Oxford said of the incident after the match: "I thought it was a stamp. I couldn't see it but it felt like someone just stood on my head."

Leeds manager Garry Monk, meanwhile, defended Cooper, saying: "I've not seen it yet but I know Liam very well and he's 100 per cent not that type of lad.

"He's not in any way that type of player and, in my opinion, it would definitely be an accident or one that he didn't mean to do."

Cooper has until 6pm on Tuesday to reply to the charge.
