Manager wants some new faces

Preston boss Alan Irvine admitted he will be looking to bolster his squad in January following the 1-0 home defeat to 10-man Scunthorpe. A first half goal from Martin Paterson was enough to give a young Scunthorpe side the victory at Deepdale as defender Cliff Byrne was sent off. As a result of the defeat, Preston slumped to third from bottom in the Championship and Irvine revealed he will be spending during the forthcoming transfer window. "I have ideas about what position I would like to strengthen, to add to, but actually being able to do that is an awful lot harder," he said. "We are looking at the whole range in terms of trying to find players permanently, or to bring in people on loan. We are nowhere near having found anyone at this stage."

Disappointment

Irvine could not hide his disappointment following the Boxing Day defeat. Paterson beat Sean St Ledger to a loose ball to score and despite enjoying the upper hand in the second half, Preston could not make it pay. "We were hoping to build on two really good away wins and clearly we have missed an opportunity to do that," Irvine said. "We were very poor in the first half, but we were an awful lot better in the second half and could have got something out of the game had we been able to take our chances."
