Stephen Hughes has joined up with Nottingham Forest for pre-season training in an effort to earn a deal with the Championship newcomers.
The midfielder is available after Coventry decided not to offer him a new contract earlier in the summer.
A number of clubs had been tracking his situation before Colin Calderwood invited him to Forest for a closer look.
Calderwood wants to have the right blend of youth and experience in his squad and feels the former Arsenal and Everton man could be a good addition.
"He is a good solid player with good experience and, with the average age of the squad as young it is, it is important we have one or two who have been there, seen it and done it," Calderwood told the club's
official website.
"We know what Stephen is all about, so it's just an invitation for him to get started with pre-season training and have a look at where we all stand.
"It is not just an open invitation for him to come here and get fit. He has come here so we can assess him and give him the chance to put himself to the forefront of our minds.
"We all know where we stand. There were other clubs that offered him the same opportunity so I am delighted that he has chosen to come here."
Anderson a done deal
Forest have also completed the signing of Paul Anderson on loan.
The highly-rated winger is on a long-term contract at Liverpool and is expected to have a big future in the Premier League.
The 19-year-old caught the eye whilst at Swansea last term and will remain at the City Ground for the whole of the new campaign.
