Kevin Phillips is expecting to play more regularly after completing his move to Birmingham City from West Bromwich Albion.
The veteran striker has signed a two-year deal with Birmingham after only being offered a 12-month extension by the Baggies.
The length of contract played a part in Phillips' decision to leave the Hawthorns, but he was also concerned about the role he would play following West Brom's promotion to the Premier League.
"Birmingham have come in, there were no problems in agreeing what we were looking for," Phillips told Sky Sports News.
"For me, it was a no-brainer, plus it's a chance I hope to be playing regular football.
"I was told if I was staying at West Brom I'd probably be an impact player coming off the bench quite a lot, which at this stage of my career I don't want to be doing that.
"I've got a chance here at a big club now and I hope I can replicate what I did at West Brom and help Birmingham get back to the Premiership."
Phillips admits he would not have been happy to sit on the bench and take the money, if he had stayed with West Brom.
He added: "That's not in my make-up and I've never done that in my career. I'm not happy to sit on the bench.
"I understand I am going to be on the bench at some time of the season, but I think over the course of the season I'll probably play more games than sit on the bench.
"It's important at this stage of my career to try and play as regularly as I can and I feel that's more of an option here."
