Southampton boss Jan Poortvliet is hopeful young winger Nathan Dyer will sign a new contract.
Dyer has been excluded from the first team's pre-season preparations after refusing to agree an extension.
However, he is due to play in a friendly against Eastleigh on Saturday and Poortvliet is optimistic Dyer will stay at St Mary's.
"He is in talks with the club and we hope he will sign," Poortvliet told the club's official website.
"He is not training with the first team at the moment while he has not signed, but we can use him.
"He is a good player, a quick player who can dribble and cross, but he will maybe have to score more goals."
Meanwhile, Saints keeper Michael Poke has been sent out to Torquay United on loan for the season.
Poke recently signed a contract extension to 2010, but Saints are keen for the 22-year-old to accrue more first-team experience.
