Carl Cort admits he was ready to retire from football until Kieron Dyer persuaded him to visit former West Ham physio John Green.
Experienced striker Cort has recently signed a contract until the end of the season with Norwich City following a spell in Spain.
But the 31-year-old concedes he was on the brink of quitting until receiving some advice from his ex-Newcastle United team-mate Dyer.
"People talk about being on a roller-coaster," said Cort in The Sun. "But, for me, the last two years have just been downhill.
"It has been a very frustrating time.
"Earlier this year I was going to call it a day. I was moving from club to club and having big problems with my left knee.
"Kieron had been saying to me for a couple of years to see John Green. Yet I was so down in the dumps, I did not do it.
"I thought I would give it one last chance and spoke to John.
"I was reluctant to see him, as I didn't think much would happen. But I saw him, had an operation which cleaned things out in my knee, and now I am feeling fantastic.
"I want to get myself back to the level I was at mentally. Physically, I have not felt like this since I was at Wimbledon.
"I am really enjoying myself and, hopefully, can get a few more games."
