Alex McLeish says any move to resurrect Kris Boyd's transfer to Birmingham City will have to come from the Rangers striker.
Birmingham's bid to sign the prolific Scot has reached an impasse after the failure to agree personal terms.
McLeish had settled on a fee with his former club for Boyd and is not ruling out the 25-year-old still moving to St Andrews.
However, the Birmingham boss says it is up to Boyd and his representative to put a switch to the Championship club back on track.
"Kris' people are entitled to their view, but we are a Championship side and have pushed the boat out to meet the transfer fee," McLeish told the Daily Record. "It's not as if Kris is coming from the Premiership.
"We could be doing with his goals, but he is coming from Scotland. He still has to prove himself down here.
"The deal would appear to be dead, but there might yet be an opening and you can never rule anything out.
"But if a deal is to be resurrected the next call would need to come from Boydy's side.
"The situation is that we had some talks with Kris and his advisers and were miles apart.
"And as a result of that the talks were concluded and there wasn't any agreement in place.
"I've got to move on and it remains to be seen if it can be resurrected. At the moment it's unlikely."
