Scunthorpe manager Nigel Adkins has confirmed that the club are set to make a bid for Crewe midfielder Michael O'Connor.
The 21-year-old is held in high regard at Gresty Road but has not played a first-team game since February after falling foul of manager Gudjon Thordarson's tough disciplinary regime.
The Northern Ireland international first angered the Icelandic boss when he phoned in sick for training over the Christmas period instead of coming in to be assessed by club doctors, as is club policy.
Their relationship deteriorated further when O'Connor was hauled off against Northampton after being booked for dissent and the youngster was subsequently shipped out on loan to Lincoln.
O'Connor was expected to make his move to Sincil Bank permanent this summer with Hibernian - where the centre-midfielder spent a month training at the end of the season - also mooted.
However it now appears Championship side Scunthorpe are leading the race to snap up the Railwaymen ace.
"I have asked the chairman to make an enquiry about Michael," Adkins told Scunthorpe Telegraph.
"But that is as far as it has gone at the moment."
