Peterborough United boss Darren Ferguson has revealed he will not be pressing ahead with his interest in Millwall defender Zak Whitbread.
The former Liverpool youngster had emerged as a target for the Championship new boys and a fee had been agreed with Millwall.
Whitbread's agent had stated that he was waiting for Ferguson to respond with a contract offer after outlining the player's demands.
However, Ferguson admits Whitbread's wages are 'too high' and he is confident he now has sufficient defensive options at London Road.
"We did have contact with Millwall and I understand we had a bid accepted," Ferguson told the Peterborough Evening Telegraph.
"We spoke with the player, but we won't be going ahead with the deal because his wage demands were too high.
"There is no doubt that Zak is a quality player, but it's now not a position we need cover for.
"Gaby (Zakuani) and Craig (Morgan) showed their worth last season, while Krystian (Pearce) is an exciting prospect."
