Nottingham Forest have been hit by the news that captain Paul McKenna will not play for the club again this season.
The midfielder suffered knee ligament damage earlier this month and the problem has proved to be much more serious that first feared.
Manager Billy Davies had hoped to have his skipper available at some stage during the run-in with Forest expected to feature in the end of season play-offs.
However, the 32-year-old is certain to miss the club's six remaining Championship games as well as the post-season shake-up if Forest are involved.
"He is finished. I don't think he'll make the play-offs, he is done," Davies told the club's official website.
"I have known this was a massive blow since he got injured. The last player we could afford to lose this season was him.
"I think we could have afforded to lose any player in the side this season - apart from McKenna. That is why it is such a blow.
"You could see that on Monday against Newcastle, he would have pulled people around."
