Experienced keeper linked with Championship club

Skysports.com understands Bristol City are close to pulling off a major coup with the signing of goalkeeper David James. The 39-year-old shot-stopper has been in talks with SPL side Celtic and Premier League outfit Sunderland following his release from Portsmouth. However, James could now be playing his football in the Championship next term with City at Ashton Gate. The England international is reportedly not keen to uproot to Scotland or the North-East and Robins manager Steve Coppell has targeted him as a potential key man. James was initially set to stay on at Pompey but the cash-strapped club withdrew their contract offer as he failed to respond before a set deadline. His signing would provide Bristol City a massive boost as they look to challenge for promotion.
