The 28-year-old arrives as a free agent and secured the short-term deal after impressing in training with Danny Wilson's squad for the past week.
Wilson believes the former Rotherham and Doncaster Rovers player can add something different to his side as he seeks to guide the second-from-bottom Tykes away from the relegation zone.
The Barnsley boss, who has also secured the deadline day signing of Emmanuel Frimpong from Arsenal for an undisclosed fee, told the club's official website: "Martin is a left-footed player which will add some balance in the side as we don't have any left-footers in that area.
"He gives us experience and quality that we are looking for.
"If you look at his career, he has had a few injuries, but when he has played it has been to a high standard and that's another statement from our point of view that we want to bring in as much quality as possible.
"We've been able to add to the squad again in an area that was needed and where we can add competition for places which will help drive the players on plus it brings more hope and excitement for the fans."
