The 25-year-old, who initially joined Boro on loan from Peterborough United on January transfer deadline day, signed a contract with the Championship outfit on Tuesday that will keep him at the Riverside Stadium until 2017.
Tomlin is now in line to make his debut against Leeds United on Saturday after serving a three-match ban.
"Lee is a good player, he has quality and he can score goals, which is important," Karanka told the Gazette Live.
"He will work and fight for our team, we like to fight and he has this quality, to play in our style.
"He scored 11 goals in the Championship last season and this season he's scored goals for Peterborough, so I think he's a good player for us."
Karanka added: "He needed to be match fit as soon as possible."
"He was suspended and I think that was good in some respects because it enabled him to get fitter.
"Lee's a No.10 but he can play in all three positions in front of the holding midfielders."
