The Manchester-born 22-year-old came through the youth ranks at the Etihad Stadium before leaving in 2012.
He was snapped up by Serie B side Brescia, and he has been a mainstay in their midfield this season.
Benali, who is also a full international with Libya, has 12-months left on his current deal and he is attracting a lot of interest.
A number of clubs in the Championship are keeping tabs on his situation but he could also find himself in Serie A next season with Sassuolo and Chievo Verona both keen as well as promotion-bound Palermo.
With interest also emerging from Germany and the Middle East, Benali could very well have a number of options this summer - but the first thing he will be doing is having talks with Brescia.
His agent Adam Bouskouchi told Sky Sports: "I am aware there is a lot of interest in Ahmad given his impressive performances this season.
"However, we will first sit down with Brescia and assess what is best for all parties concerned."
The player himself admits that a return to England is his long-term ambition.
"I would eventually like to return to play back home in England as I know I have grown and improved as a player since I left, although I am open to whatever is best for the next step of my career and I am leaving that side of things to my agent," he stated.
