Steve Bruce is desperate to add to an impressive summer of spending by bringing in a new striker, with a number of forwards targeted by the former Manchester United defender.
The Portuguese international was one of the options open to Bruce, but he hankers for a move to Benfica.
Fiorentina know they need to cash in on Gomes, who has already rejected a switch to Turkey, and is known not to fancy a move to England.
"The Nuno Gomes affair is clear," sports director Giuseppe Pavone stated.
"The player wants to sign for Benfica. Birmingham would like to have him on loan, but he refuses this move.
"Nuno Gomes has asked Birmingham for a lot of money, and the English club refuses to pay such an expensive wage for the Portuguese player," he told calciomanager.it.
"Nuno Gomes wants to play for Benfica. He strongly wants this."
Tottenham were strongly linked with a move for the talented hit-man, but Glenn Hoddle denied any interest in his signature.
The loan deal with Blues would have been with a view to a permanent transfer for é¼13 million next year, but Gomes is determined to secure a move to Benfica, even though they do not appear to have enough money to match the offer from St Andrews.
