Hughes fired the opening goal in last weekend's victory over Sunderland which inched Blues closer to Premiership safety.
It was only the 26-year-old's sixth start of the season and his first Premiership appearance of the calendar year.
The former Wrexham man was primarily in the team due to an injury to Robbie Savage and once the Welsh international returns to fitness, Hughes expects to be confined to the shadows once more.
Blues tackle Charlton Athletic this weekend and Hughes hopes he has convinced manager Steve Bruce to keep him in his plans.
"Whether I play next Saturday is down to the manager," said Hughes. "I put on a performance out there, scored a goal, so it's in his court now.
"Robbie Savage might be fit for our next game and he may want to pick 'Sav'. I'm not counting on playing."
