Bruce in Hughes pledge

BIRMINGHAM boss Steve Bruce says that Bryan Hughes does have a future at the club providing he performs to the best of his ability.

The midfielder scored a quality goal against Sunderland on Saturday after saying that he was not given enough of a chance by the manager.

Bruce does not doubt Hughes's ability, but says that his performances do not always match that, and that he needs to try harder at times.

"Nobody knows more than I do that Bryan has got so much ability," said Bruce.

"Maybe only someone with his talent could have scored the type of goal he did against Sunderland.

"But I have to say that I was a tinge disappointed with some of his performances early on."

Bruce says that Hughes will be in his plans at St Andrews should he build on his display against The Black Cats, and start to show his skills on a weekly basis.

"As for his future and all the rest of it, that's entirely up to Bryan.

"We know he has all the ingredients, it's how he plays that will decide things."
