The 22-year-old has firmly established himself as number one at Stade Armand-Cesari-Furiani this term, having made 32 appearances for the Corsican side.
With first-choice keeper Nico Vaesen facing a lengthy injury lay-off and Andy Marriott and Ian Bennett yet to convince manager Steve Bruce they can be a permanent fixture between the posts, City are reportedly eyeing Penneteau, who attracted the attentions of Premiership rivals Arsenal at the turn of the year.
The Bastia man is not the only French keeper believed to be on the Midlands outfit's wanted list though.
Bordeaux goalkeeper Frederic Roux is disgruntled at continually playing second fiddle to French international Ulrich Rame at Parc Lescure and looks likely to quit Girondins at the end of the season.
There are suggestions that Steve Bruce is also keeping tabs on Roux, and ex-Aston Villa keeper Spink (pictured) may be sent on another scouting mission to watch him in action.
