Birmingham City are sweating on the fitness of new signing Emile Heskey.Birmingham City are sweating on the fitness of new signing Emile Heskey after he was stretched off at the weekend.
Heskey was forced out of The Blues' pre-season clash with Osasuna and now he looks extremely doubtful for opening game at Portsmouth on Saturday.
The former Liverpool star may have even suffered knee ligament damage, but manager Steve Bruce is keeping his fingers crossed that the knock is not as bad as first feared.
"When Emile went down I though he'd been knocked out," said Bruce. "The injury left you with a numb, sickening feeling but we're keeping hopeful."
One player definitely not making the start of the season is David Dunn, who is set to see a top London nerve specialist to help him over his latest injury setback - a hamstring problem.
"Dunny needs all the help he can get. He's obviously very down about the problem," added Bruce.
"We thought we had the situation under control, but it wasn't to be.
"We do intend to cover every base that we can. The first step is to send him to see a nerve specialist as that might be the cause of his problems - although it could be his back as well.
"At this point, we don't really know -and that's only adding to the sense of frustration David is feeling.
"This is an opportunity that hasn't arisen until now because the guy is booked solid. We've pulled a few strings and made an appointment for him. He comes highly recommended as he's treated some of the best in the game.
"We have to see what happens on Monday. Then we'll think about further treatment if necessary."
