Sunderland have confirmed they will appeal against Steven Caldwell's sending off at the weekend.The Scottish international saw red after a clash with West Ham's Luke Chadwick.
Sunderland boss Mick McCarthy was unhappy with referee Graham Salisbury's decision and he confirmed the club would be looking to get the decision overturned.
"Of course the sending off affected the game," said McCarthy.
"I've seen it and I don't think he stamped on him, he's tried to get the ball with his foot. He's not that kind of lad, Steve Caldwell.
"My concern is that [Luke] Chadwick had already been booked. He was trying to stop a quick free kick being taken and that's a booking.
"If fairness is going to be administered, he was trying to stop us, which is a booking. The other fella should have gone off as well. I think he [the referee] did spoil a good game.
"I'll have another look at it and I'll appeal. Whether it does any good, I don't know."
Meanwhile, McCarthy has accepted that he is set to lose on-loan star Darren Carter - who looks set to return to Birmingham."There's every chance that Darren Carter will have to go back to Birmingham," admitted McCarthy.
"Steve Bruce has been great to let us have him. Darren's been terrific and I'll be saddened to see him go, if that's the case. I think it's more than likely."
