The Frenchman limped out of Sunday's 2-0 Midlands derby defeat at West Brom after just 37 minutes after picking up the problem.
Tebily was taken to have the ankle scanned and the club discovered that he had suffered some damage to the muscle in his calf.
The 29-year-old now faces up to three weeks on the sidelines to recover from the problem.
Blues boss Steve Bruce has responded by recalling son Alex from his loan spell at League One side Oldham Athletic.
The 20-year-old stopper signed for Birmingham from Blackburn in January, but remained on loan at Boundary Park where he has played since Christmas.
Recent injuries have forced Bruce to bring his son to St Andrews and cut short his loan stint with The Latics.
"Alex's loan spell at the club was due to end on 19th March but father Steve, manager at St Andrews, has asked for the young defender's return earlier than anticipated," said a statement on Oldham's website.
"This unexpected move could now leave Latics short on defensive cover should injury's strike at this crucial point of the season."
Better injury news for Bruce comes with Mario Melchiot responding well to treatment on an ankle injury, and he is expected to return to training on Monday.
