Kilkenny made his Premiership debut at the weekend and marked the occasion by being sent off in the 2-2 draw against Liverpool.
His indiscretion will not affect his St Andrew's future as Birmingham boss Steve Bruce is keen to hand Kilkenny a new deal.
The 19-year-old's present contract expires at the end of the season and Bruce wants to retain Kilkenny's services.
"We're going to open up discussions about a new contract," Bruce told the Evening Mail.
"I've already had a conversation about it with my managing director and hopefully we'll get something sorted out."
Kilkenny spent a productive spell on loan at Oldham Athletic last season and made his senior bow for Birmingham in the Carling Cup last week.
He was dismissed against Liverpool at the weekend for deliberate handball after he blocked Jamie Carragher's header on the line.
