Blues lodge Austrian offer

Birmingham have confirmed that they have lodged a bid for Paul Scharner.

Birmingham have confirmed that they have lodged a bid for Austrian international Paul Scharner.

The Brann Bergen defender was first spotted by Blues boss Steve Bruce during his side's pre-season tour to Norway.

Following numerous scouting trips, Bruce firmed up his interest with an offer for the 25-year-old - who played against England last week.

"I can confirm that we have made a bid for him, which was tabled early last week and we're hoping for a response from his respective club," Bruce said.

"We would have liked to have kept these things under wraps but it's in the public domain and everybody seems to know about it.

"He is someone that came to our attention in the summer when we played against them in pre-season.

"The beauty of him is that he can play in a few positions.

"We have now watched him, after Wednesday night, eight times and we decided to table a bid before the England game.

"He is someone that we like and as usual with these things, watch this space."
