The 18-year-old full-back made his debut as a substitute against Huddersfield Town last weekend and he has been handed a contract extension until June next year.
Young team-mate Jack Deaman received a similar deal and Hancox admits he feels more settled at St Andrews, but he is determined to push for more first-team appearances.
"It's fantastic," Hancox, told Birmingham Mail. "It's always at the back of your mind when you only have six months.
"But as long as you keep working hard, you will have a chance. Myself and Jack just hit the ground running from the start in pre-season, we just got on with it instead of thinking about things.
"And we got our rewards by signing extensions and hopefully we can both push on more and at the end of the season make it another year or two-year deal.
"That's my long-term aim. Short-term, it's just to stay in and around the first team for as long as I can. If I could play in more games, brilliant.
"But it's about the squad and I know when David Murphy and the senior lads are fit I will be overlooked.
"But as long as I can keep working hard in training, in under-21 games if I'm not involved in the first team, then it will give me every chance."
