Both teams are well known to each other after their cup encounters and The Black Cats were able to move into the FA Cup Fourth Round, thanks to goals from their potent partnership of Kevin Phillips and Niall Quinn, plus a late strike by Kevin Kilbane.
However, Peter Reid`s men were made to work hard, after Clinton Morrison had put the home side in front on 24 minutes.
Morrison latched onto a terrible mistake by Alex Rae, who gave the ball away in his own half, to race clear and thrash the ball past the exposed Thomas Sorensen.
Sunderland started to press for an equaliser, and Alex Kolinka was overworked in Palace`s goal - producing fine saves from Phillips.
Black Cats pressure eventually told, as two goals in a minute mid-way through the second-half from Quinn and Phillips gave Sunderland the lead.
Quinn`s goal was a peach, as he chested the ball on the penalty spot before smashing high into the net. Before Palace could regroup, Phillips latched onto the ball and fired past Kolinka.
Palace, however, forced extra-time when Hayden Mullins raced clear before crossing for Steve Thomson to score at the far post.
The Premiership side proved stronger in extra-time, with Phillips capitalising on a mistake by Neil Ruddock to smash a shot past Kolinka.
Sunderland then lost Daniel Dichio, who was sent off after receiving a second caution, but Kevin Kilbane sealed the win with a confident strike late in the game.
