Mariners player-manager Paul Groves has watched the 23-year-old in The Black Cats reserves and is likely to put the former Everton man into his squad for Saturday's match at Gillingham.
Oster returns to the club where he burst onto the scene as an 18-year-old in the 1996/97 season.
At the end of that season, the Welsh international moved to The Toffees for £2 million and spent two seasons at Goodison Park before moving again to Wearside.
He has failed to make an impact at the Stadium of Light and he will now look to get more first team action with one of his old clubs.
On the loan signing of Oster, Groves told the Grimsby Town official website: "John is a quality player who will bring versatility to the team.
"He has great awareness and he is a very sharp, bright player with good feet.
"He's a great signing for us."
Meanwhile, striker Paul Robinson has returned to his club Wimbledon following a three-month loan spell with The Mariners.
The 23-year-old made 13 appearances during his loan spell with Grimsby but lost his place to fellow loanee Steve Kabba up front.
Robinson signed for The Dons from Newcastle United for £1.5 million in the summer of 2000 but failed but make an impact at Selhurst Park.
His loan spell at Grimsby complemented similar spells at Burnley and Dundee United but he will try and resurrect his career with Wimbledon upon his return.
