Mariners boss Paul Groves was looking to extend Oster`s deal until the end of the season, but has been forced to send him back to Wearside by The Black Cats.
Oster`s loan spell was due to expire on Thursday, but he has travelled back north - ruling him out of Grimsby`s New Year`s Day clash with Bradford.
The former Everton man has been in fine form recently, and would have hoped to bow out on a high against fellow stugglers Bradford.
The Mariners fans will still have fond memories of Oster, who scored three goals in his last two appearances.
Oster will swap Blundell Park for the Theatre of Dreams, as he goes straight into the Sunderland squad to face Manchester United at Old Trafford.
