The 24-year-old is out-of-contract at the end of the season and is desperate to secure a fresh deal after resurrecting his Black Cats career.
Oster made his first Sunderland start in almost two years in Saturday's FA Cup draw at Bolton after being recalled from a loan spell at former club Grimsby.
The winger is eager to stay on Wearside but concedes it is up to him to prove he is worthy of a contract extension.
"It is up to me to force Sunderland to offer me a new contract," admitted Oster to The Journal.
"If that doesn't happen I will have to deal with it but I really want to stay here. It is down to me now.
"If I put in the performances, hopefully that will force the manager's hand to offer me a contract.
"I know that I need to play well but I've always believed in my own ability, it has just been a case of getting the chance. If I put my hand on my heart, I thought my chances here at Sunderland were over."
