The Argentine winger has recently returned from a long spell out injured, but is struggling to force his way into Howard Wilkinson's first-team plans.
The 21-year-old was brought to Wearside from Argentinos Juniors by former Sunderland boss Peter Reid, but could now find himself surplus to the requirements of Wilkinson.
Javier Clemente's struggling Espanyol side are said to be lining up a £3.2 million bid for the skilful midfielder, who netted an excellent goal in Sunderland's FA Cup triumph over Bolton last week.
Such a sizeable bid for a player struggling to refind form and fitness seems unlikely, but the Catalans are known to be looking for reinforcements as they bid to stave off the drop to La Segunda, and were linked with Italian Moreno Torricelli and Chelsea's Albert Ferrer during the week.
The rumours are sure to be unpopular with Black Cats fans who had taken Arca to their hearts following an impressive first term in the Premiership last year.
However, Wilkinson is keen to free up funds to make signings of his own during the transfer window, and thus the South American could now be sacrificed.
