The Black Cats' 2-2 draw at promotion rivals Ipswich on Sunday inched the Wearside club a step closer to a return to the top flight.
If Sunderland beat Leicester on Saturday and Ipswich fail to overcome Leeds, then Mick McCarthy's men will clinch a spot in The Premiership for next season.
But after the nerve-jangling draw at Portman Road, Republic of Ireland international Elliott admits the tension is starting to show.
Elliott, who scored against Ipswich, is bullish, though, about Sunderland's prospects of avoiding a dramatic late collapse.
"People are bound to be a bit tense with so much at stake," Elliott told the Sunderland Echo. "It is down to who handles it.
"I do not think nerves played a part in us not winning at Ipswich. A draw would have been a decent result before the game, it is just the way it went at the end that makes it disappointing.
"The other two teams need us to slip up. In the cold light of day, Ipswich will be the most disappointed. They need someone else to slip up and were ahead in the game.
"We have a big home game now and we have to look forward to it. It is up to us to get enough points.
"We are remaining confident about it. We were 1-0 down [at Ipswich] with more than an hour gone and came back from it so we have shown we can deal with pressure situations."
