Sunderland are considering a loan swoop for Ajax striker Yannis Anastasiou.
Sunderland are considering a loan swoop for Ajax striker Yannis Anastasiou, skysports.com can reveal.
The Greek attacker is not a first-choice selection at the Amsterdam club and, although he is under contract until the end of the season, both parties would accept a move during January's transfer window.
The 32-year-old actually enjoyed a spell in the limelight last month when making the most of a surprise call-up by Danny Blind to score twice in a UEFA Champions League victory against FC Thun.
Formerly with the likes of Anderlecht and Roda JC, Anastasiou had a record of seven goals in 26 games for Ajax before the current season got underway and he has been largely unable to force his way into the side this term.
It is believed that Black Cats boss Mick McCarthy wants to see the player in action one more time before making a final decision on whether to beef up his attack by adding the experienced hit-man to his ranks.
Sunderland are struggling at the foot of the Premiership table but McCarthy will not be handed a substantial amount of transfer funds to improve his squad.
Hence, a loan move for Anastasiou would be considered as an option, even though another burly striker in Kevin Kyle is determined to make his comeback from injury in the New Year.
