Sunderland sign Smith

Sunderland have made another surprise move in the transfer market.

Sunderland have made another surprise move in the transfer market by snapping up Leeds United teenager Kevin Smith.

The 18-year-old was allowed to leave Elland Road after failing to make his way into Kevin Blackwell's first team plans so the move up a division will be a welcome boost to the young striker.

After previously capturing Martin Woods from Leeds, Mick McCarthy seems to be making a habit of offering opportunities to youngsters from the Championship promotion chasers.

"We are delighted Kevin has been able to find another club," said Leeds' chief operating officer Shaun Harvey.

"Leeds United wishes him every success in the future."

The Scottish forward will bid to compete for a place in McCarthy's squad as they bid to pull off a miraculous escape from the threat of relegation.

Some Sunderland fans have been critical of the lack of movement in the transfer window and it seems highly unlikely that Smith will be in first team contention this term.
