Rory Delap reckons caretaker manager Kevin Ball's unstinting spirit will stand Sunderland in good stead as they face up to the inevitable prospect of relegation.
The Black Cats are destined for the drop but earned a reprieve when drawing at Everton and seeing other results go their way this weekend.
The January signing from Southampton scored the equaliser in a 2-2 draw and was inches away from grabbing a late winner when his long-range drive cannoned off a post.
"We knew on Saturday that it could be the day when things were settled for us but we still want to get wins and we still have that belief that we can get results," he told The Sunderland Echo.
"That might sound daft in our position but you either have belief or you don't.
"The spirit was there under Mick McCarthy and everyone knows what the gaffer [Ball] is all about.
"Desire, commitment and the will to win were big parts of his game, and it is going to rub off on people who perhaps had doubts because of the way the season had gone."
