Billy Davies is confident he can talk Jon Stead into staying at Derby County permanently.
Stead is currently on loan at Pride Park from Sunderland until January 2 and has impressed the Rams manager.
He has scored in his last three matches, including the only goal in Saturday's East Midlands derby against Leicester City.
The 23-year-old has already hinted that he would be open to a long-term deal at Derby after enduring a frustrating period at Sunderland.
Davies is now hoping he can put together a suitably attractive package to conclude a permanent move for Stead in the New Year.
"I've had a good chat with him and explained my feelings," Davies told the Derby Evening Telegraph.
"We just have to keep our fingers crossed and hope something can be done. I'm convinced this is the right place for him.
"We can only do what we can do. We can offer him the club we are, the facilities we have and the potential that is here and hope he buys into where we are trying to go as regards to ambition.
"His goal against Leicester was a great finish. He is a great lad, a joy to work with and has settled into the squad."
