Sunderland are believed to be lining up a swoop for De Sanctis as Roy Keane looks to bolster his goalkeeping options.
Keane has been frustrated in his attempts to bring in a new goalkeeper after seeing moves for Scott Carson and Jussi Jaaskelainen thwarted.
De Sanctis is highly-rated in Italy and he has attracted the interest of Manchester United in the past.
Udinese are resigned to losing De Sanctis with the 30-year-old thought to be keen on trying his luck in a new league.
De Sanctis admits he is flattered by Sunderland's interest and that he has always wanted to play in England.
"I am very pleased that Sunderland are interested in signing me," De Sanctis is quoted as saying in the Daily Star.
"It has always been my ambition to play in England."
