Roy Keane believes unassuming Craig Gordon has the potential to become the best goalkeeper in Britain - as well as a Sunderland legend.
The Scottish shot-stopper moved to the Black Cats in the summer for a British goalkeeping record £7million fee, which could rise to £9million.
But Keane reckons this is money well spent and 24-year-old Gordon - who performed heroics in Scotland's 1-0 win in France earlier this month - could go on to be even better than England's top keepers Paul Robinson and David James.
The Sunderland boss told the Sunday Mirror: "England's top two are bloody good keepers. But with the age our keeper is at he still has a massive potential to become the best keeper in Britain.
"He is at a good age, has a lot of games behind him in Scotland and experienced pressure situations and big games for his national team. He has come through them with flying colours.
"Craig is going to be under a lot of pressure for us this season. He will have to make a lot of saves. But he'll handle it and be better for it.
"Craig can become a real hero at Sunderland. He has certainly endeared himself to the fans with the start he has made here."
Keane praised Gordon's unassuming style and hopes he will prove to be a top goalkeeper for Sunderland.
"The beauty for us is he is very unassuming. He quietly gets on with being a top goalkeeper and a lot of fans like that.
"Our fans throughout the years have always loved a striker or a goalscorer and hopefully that will never change. But you can love keepers as well as strikers."
But while Gordon may be unassuming, he has already stamped his presence on the Sunderland dressing room.
Keane said: "He made his mark at the club in his first training session at the club. It helps when you are 6ft 5in, but it isn't just a physical presence with Craig.
"He's got that inner confidence which says, 'I know I'm good, but I'm not bragging about it'. He showed that class and quality from day one."
