Sunderland keeper has impressed since making the first team

Keiren Westwood is staking a strong claim to make the number one shirt at Sunderland his own according to boss Steve Bruce. The Ireland goalkeeper had been attracting the attention of a number of Premier League clubs including Everton before Bruce swooped to snap him up on a free transfer over the summer Injuries to Craig Gordon and Simon Mignolet have meant that Westwood has got his chance to shine sooner than he had perhaps expected and is showing no signs of wanting to give it up easily. "Fair play to Keiren," said Bruce. "He has stuck at it and trained really well. When he has got his chance he handled his Premier League debut very well and proved he is a very good goalkeeper. "So thankfully all that hard work in the summer getting him has paid off. "We've got two badly injured keepers and there's no sign of Craig Gordon coming back in, even if Simon's back in the building at least "It is his chance now. If he keeps performing like he is, it is quite straight forward. By the looks of him he is going to take some shifting because he is looking very capable."
