Emanuele Giaccherini missed a wonderful opportunity in the first half to claim the points for his side but somehow managed to scoop the ball over the bar from inside the six-yard box.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, though, Poyet refused to blame the Italian.
Poyet said: "He's down, he keeps saying sorry, he can't believe it. That's football though and sometimes things happen for a reason.
"We were the better team, we made it difficult and we have improved a lot."
Sunderland lost Wes Brown to a red card on their last away trip Stoke and Poyet was thankful that 11 men remained on the field this week.
Poyet added: "No own goal or red card and the referee was good. I am happy.
"I think it was a good game. It was our best away performance over 90 minutes. We controlled play and created the better chances."
Sunderland entertain Chelsea at the Stadium of Light on Wednesday.
