The Internacional frontman is expected on Wearside to undergo a medical during the next 24 hours or so after the two clubs agreed a fee which is reported to be £3m.
Asked on Tuesday afternoon if the deal was likely to go through, Poyet said: "I hope so. It's not done, but we are very, very close."
Scocco, who has also been linked with Cardiff City, would become the third Argentinian to complete a move to the Stadium of Light this month.
He will be following in the footsteps of keeper Oscar Ustari and defender Santiago Vergini, who both made debuts in Saturday's 1-0 FA Cup fourth-round victory over Kidderminster.
Scocco, 28, has been a long-term target for Sunderland, who wanted to sign him before his summer switch to Internacional.
However, the move has been complicated by the fact his current club still have to finish paying former side Newell's Old Boys for his transfer.
