Sunderland ended their pre-season campaign with a 2-0 win over Serie A outfit Udinese, as they also handed a debut to new £10million signing Jack Rodwell.
The Black Cats named a near full strength line-up for the game, played at Bishop Auckland.
And evenly matched contest for much of the game, Sunderland broke the deadlock just before the hour-mark when Santiago Vergini - who has must completed his permanent move to the club - scored as he bundled the ball over the line after a corner from Jordi Gomez.
Then just a minute later and Sunderland double their lead and it was again Vergini at the heart of the action.
Vergini was bundled to the ground in the box, and that allowed Connor Wickham to step up and convert from 12-yards.
Sunderland's pre-season is now at an end and they will next take to the field to face West Brom at the Hawthorns in their opening Premier League encounter.
