Sunderland manager Gus Poyet says his team should treat their draw with Tottenham as a win after coming back twice to draw 2-2.

Sunderland manager Gus Poyet felt his team should treat their draw with Tottenham as a win after coming back twice to draw 2-2.

Harry Kane's unfortunate own goal gifted Sunderland a point after finding themselves second best to Tottenham for long periods of the game.

Poyet was full of praise for his side's battling spirit as they twice came from behind for what looked like an unlikely draw.

"Very hard for us, I thought Spurs were magnificent today," Poyet told Sky Sports. "They have quality all over the park, they are strong, they have got power and we suffered for periods of the game but we have done the right things to come back somehow with fighting spirit, never giving up and making sure there is not two goals difference between the two teams.

"There are plenty of positives, but without any doubt it was the hardest game we have played so far."

Asked if he felt it was a like a win for Sunderland today, Poyet added: "I think we need to take it like that.

"I know in the table it is not three points, but I think at the same time when you play against teams like Spurs today you need to be realistic.
