Sunderland midfielder Jeremain Lens has been called up to the Netherlands squad for their crucial European Qualifier against Turkey.

The 27-year old replaces captain Arjen Robben, who lasted just 27 minutes of their shock 1-0 defeat to Iceland due to injury before coming off injured.

That result left the Dutch six points behind the automatic qualifying positions and second place Czech Republic.

Lens joined Sunderland this summer from Dynamo Kiev for a reported fee of £8m and has impressed since his arrival.

The Dutchman has started every game for Sunderland and contributed with two assists and an important goal that helped earn his side a point against Aston Villa.

Lens has been capped 30 times by the Netherlands and was part of their squad that reached the semi-finals in the 2014 World Cup.

The winger, who has also scored eight goals for his country - the last in a friendly against Wales - will be hoping to get the Netherlands qualifying campaign back on track in their vital game against Turkey on Sunday.

Turkey are just one point behind the Netherlands and harbour hopes of pipping them to a November play-off spot.
